How will the newly built Nechiphu Tunnel benefit progress in Arunachal Pradesh?

Back in October 2020, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh ji laid the foundation stone for the strategic Nechiphu Tunnel. In three years time, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) completed the project, and was recently inaugurated virtually by Rajnath Singh ji on September 12, 2023 along with 36 crucial projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

The 500-metre long "D-shaped, Single Tube Double Lane Nechiphu Tunnel” built at an altitude of 5,700 feet above sea level on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang road, is a part of 90 key central infrastructural projects across India at a total investment of Rs. 2941 Cr. It offers all-weather connectivity to the strategic Tawang region along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by combating visibility issues in the Nechiphu pass, that used to pose challenges for both civilians and Indian military during dense foggy seasons.

The tunnel holds significant tactical importance for the Indian forces, by reducing distance of 6 km and ensuring safe passage all year round. Moreover, it enhances security by eliminating potential threats from across the border.

This modern tunnel is equipped with automatic lighting and monitoring systems, advanced electromechanical features, and emergency firefighting equipment. It also includes raised pathways for pedestrian safety, utility ducts, and telecommunications infrastructure, making it not only a military asset but a boon for local populations, tourists, and the environment.

In combination with the Sela Tunnel (under-construction), the Nechiphu Tunnel establishes all-weather connectivity, reducing the carbon footprint in the eco-sensitive region. These tunnels significantly improve road geometry, eliminate fog-related hazards, and enhance safety and all-weather connectivity for both military and public traffic.

In light of this landmark achievement, we invite the citizens of Arunachal Pradesh to share their opinion on how the ongoing infrastructure and road connectivity projects will impact the overall progress of the state. Also, what other steps can be taken by the Govt to ensure enhanced border safety and security?
