Human beings are born with a default set of instincts and impulses. While this default nature of ours is helpful activating our survival mode, we often find that they are not enough to lead a fulfilled, balanced life.

To achieve the latter, we must learn to discipline ourselves. In simple terms, to be disciplined means to lead a life bound by a defined set of principles, rules or norms. It restricts us from indulging in whatever fancies our attention in the moment, control our impulses and instead channel our time & effort in things which are beneficial to us in the long-term.

Often, when the word 'discipline' is mentioned, people are quick to view it as an obstruction. Many may feel that being ‘disciplined’ do not grant them the freedom that is needed in life. Rather, it is perceived to be a controlling factor that makes us uptight and ‘robotic’.

Contrary to this belief, a disciplined life actually grants us a purpose and makes our life easier to lead. We learn to be accountable for our actions and be responsible overall. Admiral William H. McRaven, in his speech to University Graduation, Texas, 2014 said, "If you want to change the world, start by making your bed." This is a simple yet powerful example to be disciplined in the most basic sense, and how it can alter our life for the better.

Simple tasks such as making our bed first thing in the morning, doing the dishes after eating, etc. give us a sense of accomplishment and acquaint us with the importance of executing them in an orderly manner. These little habits accumulated over time, enable us to be disciplined across different verticals of our life, such as in our academics, career, within our family or in a social setup.

As a society, we are a set of diverse people coming from different walks of life. In such a scenario, it becomes increasingly difficult to coexist in harmony if we as individuals lack discipline. It has been witnessed time and again that a disciplined gathering can resolve the most conflicted of topics without mayhem. However, absence of discipline may lead to chaotic consequences which can be detrimental to the advancement of a state.

Therefore, leading a disciplined life is not only essential for our individual benefit, but is also deemed critical for the benefit of our society overall and enabling a state to grow and prosper.

In the given context, MyGov Arunachal invites everyone to share their insights on - How can being ‘disciplined’ benefit us at an individual level and as a society overall?

Without discipline,no human being is destined to reach his or her coveted goal. A life without discipline is like a ship without a rudder. Hence, everyone must remember that in order to live life fruitfully ONLY a disciplines person is the ultimate winner. SwamiVivekananda has rightly said,"Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached."
