Arunachal Pradesh has commendably topped the Northeastern states in the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), highlighting the dedication of the Department of Public Health Engineering (PHED) and their commitment to achieving 100% saturation in the program.
Key Accomplishments:
• Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC): At the start of JJM in 2019, only 20,989 households had FHTC. This number has now risen to 2.9 lakh households, showcasing the program's effectiveness.
• Inclusive Efforts: Engineers, employees, and village water and sanitation committees deserve special recognition for their work. Despite challenging terrain and isolated communities, they achieved the mission a year ahead of the national target.
Overcoming Challenges:
• Arunachal Jal Sankalp Yojna (AJSY): Many rural communities were ineligible for JJM due to specific requirements. To ensure no community was left out, Arunachal Pradesh launched AJSY. Combining AJSY with JJM, the state spent approximately Rs 590.80 crores from its own funds to cover 20,989 households not eligible under JJM.
Significance:
• Commitment to Clean Water: This achievement demonstrates Arunachal Pradesh's dedication to providing clean drinking water to all citizens, regardless of eligibility under government initiatives.
• Model for Other States: The success story offers a valuable model for other states, emphasizing efficient planning, resource utilization, and state-specific initiatives.
Moving Forward:
To maintain this success, continuous efforts are needed for the sustainability of clean drinking water. Collaboration among public health engineers, local communities, and government bodies is crucial. Regular monitoring, maintenance, and public awareness campaigns on water conservation will help sustain the progress made.
