An initiative was recently launched in Seijosa, Pakke-Kessang district, a dedicated Workers’ Club for the frontline staff and families of Pakke Tiger Reserve. This facility reflects a much-needed focus on the welfare of forest guards and field personnel who serve tirelessly in often challenging conditions.

The club is designed to support both physical and mental well-being. It comes equipped with sports equipment, a reading library, indoor games, and a common area for community interaction. Such spaces are not just recreational; they foster unity, ease stress, and encourage learning and engagement among forest staff and their families.

Initiatives like this help improve morale and give back to those who protect our natural treasures.

What do you think about such initiatives?

Should similar clubs be established in other protected areas across Arunachal Pradesh?

In the forest protection camps, guards spend time in almost isolation. Mobility to local villages in the forest range is a challenge due to long distances, uneven or difficult terrain, and no access to motorised vehicles. This further means a looming risk of inconsistent ration supplies, particularly in times of bad weather. No electricity, lack of clean drinking water, and near absence of healthcare further decapitate the job.

As eco-tourism activities stopped across protected areas, it not only deterred the extra-vigilant eyes of naturalist guides and tourists, but also curtailed parks’ funds. These funds benefit daily wage workers and people residing in the proximity of a park.

With roads and public spaces emptied due to the lockdown, wildlife was reported to be using them. Increased interaction of conflict-prone wild animals (elephants, gaur, tigers, etc) with humans can not only result in damage to property and life, but can also trigger anti-wildlife sentiments during a time of national health and economic emergency. As a consequence, there can be retaliatory killings of wildlife.

A forest officer is primarily responsible for the conservation, protection, and management of forest resources and wildlife. Their duties include preventing illegal activities, implementing forest policies, managing forest resources sustainably, and protecting wildlife. They also play a key role in community development, particularly in rural and tribal areas that are dependent on forests.
