Arunachal Pradesh is one of the developing states of India, and while it may not be a mainstream hub for sports, athletes from this state are making waves in various competitions across the country. The state has produced several athletes who have represented the country in various national and international events, particularly in martial arts and football.
The sports industry in Arunachal Pradesh has immense potential, and with the right support and infrastructure, it can flourish and become a significant contributor to the state's economy. Football is the most popular and beloved sport in Arunachal Pradesh. Many talented footballers have emerged from Arunachal Pradesh and went on to represent Indian football clubs in various competitions. In recent years, martial arts have also gained recognition in the sports industry, and many athletes from Arunachal Pradesh have represented India in international competitions. Arunachal's teams such as- the Karate-do team, Wushu team, MMA team etc have performed well and brought accolades both at national and international platforms. Apart from football and martial arts, other sports have also gained popularity in Arunachal Pradesh such as badminton, weightlifting, and outdoor sports such as mountaineering etc.
Despite the vast pool of potential in Arunachal Pradesh, development of infrastructure and sports facilities in the state have only begun in the recent years, with several projects currently in the pipeline. Aside from infrastructure, the state government has taken steps to provide athletes with financial assistance.
Advancing the potential of the sporting talent, GoAP and various sports organisations have also engaged in the strategic marketing and branding campaigns to raise the state’s profile in the sporting arena.

The athletes, particularly the weightlifters, often accuse the state government of not providing financial support for procuring nutritional supplements despite repeated appeals.
A weightlifter needs to start loading nutrients at least three to four months ahead of a competition. If the nutrition the body needs is not maintained, it leads to serious injury.

Lack of support for athletes, dormant sports organisations and insufficient infrastructure paint a grim picture of sports in Arunachal Pradesh.
Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for an athlete to enhance their level of performance. An athlete can’t build the strength and endurance needed for better performance without the right fuel.

Furthermore, Arunachal Pradesh has been chosen to host the 77th National Football Championships for the Santosh Trophy in 2023–2024. This marks a significant milestone, as the state will host the final round matches of the Santosh Trophy after an 82-year hiatus. The event promises to be a major attraction, with the top six finalist teams participating.

Arunachal Pradesh is setting its sights on a bright sporting future. In August 2023, the government unveiled plans for Mission Olympic 2032, with a roadmap involving the training of local athletes to compete and excel at a global platform. Additionally, a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kaleidoscope Production and Services LLP promises to enhance the digital broadcasting of state-level and national-level tournaments, further promoting sports in the region.

The state’s commitment to sports is reflected in the Arunachal Pradesh Sports Policy of 2017. It aims to establish top-notch sports infrastructure in every district, provide employment opportunities, offer cash incentives to meritorious sportspeople, and reserve jobs in various departments, including 5% in all departments and 10% in the police force.

milestone achievement is the National Centre for Sports Science Research, one of only six such facilities in India, showcasing Arunachal Pradesh’s commitment to the holistic development of athletes. Moreover, the All India Football Federation has mentored 18,000 schoolchildren across 100 schools in the state, underlining the state’s dedication toward grassroots-level sports development.

The state has invested substantially in sports infrastructure to provide athletes with world-class facilities. This includes 20 multipurpose indoor sports halls, a 15,000-capacity Golden Jubilee Outdoor Stadium, and seven new national-level stadiums. Notably, the DK Badminton Academy spanning 20,700 sq. m. and featuring 14 two-hall badminton courts is a significant addition to the sports infrastructure.
