In a landmark step toward ecological restoration and sustainable development, the Department of Fisheries, Longding, has launched its first-ever River Ranching Program at the Tewai and Teru Rivers.

In the presence of Hon’ble Minister Shri Gabriel D Wangsu, over 90,000 fingerlings, including species like Rohu, Katla, Mirga, and more, were released into the rivers.

This initiative is designed to:
✅ Revive native fish populations
✅ Enhance biodiversity and protect aquatic ecosystems
✅ Promote sustainable fishing and support local livelihoods

What is the first step in ecological restoration?
The first step in ecosystem restoration is often to remove competitive invasive species. Invasive species are organisms that are introduced to a new habitat where they do not naturally occur and they often outcompete native species for resources such as food, water, and space.

What are the 3 methods typically used for ecological restoration?
Ecological restoration attempts to reverse damage or destruction of ecosystems. The techniques employed depend on what damage has occurred, but they often include reintroduction of native species, erosion control and pollution control.

What is ranching farming in short notes?
Ranching involves raising and managing livestock, such as cattle, sheep and goats, for meat, dairy and other products. Ranchers typically provide their animals with food, water and shelter as well as medical care and protection from predators.

Why are rivers important for our ecosystem?
Rivers support biodiversity:-
By protecting and restoring our rivers, we play a critical role in bending the biodiversity curve. Rivers and the waters and nutrients they carry feed forests, wetlands and other terrestrial habitats, and are home to many of the more than 100,000 freshwater species, according to WWF.

What are the key features of an ecological study?
An ecologic study focuses on the comparison of groups, rather than individuals; thus, individual-level data are missing on the joint distribution of variables within groups. Variables in an ecologic analysis may be aggregate measures, environmental measures or global measures.

What are the main objectives and scope of ecology?
Ecology is the study of the interactions of living organisms with their environment. One core goal of ecology is to understand the distribution and abundance of living things in the physical environment.

What is the concept of restoration ecology?
Ecological restoration is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged or destroyed. Ecosystems are dynamic communities of plants, animals and microorganisms interacting with their physical environment as a functional unit.

What is the primary cause of loss of biodiversity?
Biodiversity, or the variety of all living things on our planet, has been declining at an alarming rate in recent years, mainly due to human activities, such as land use changes, pollution and climate change.

What are the techniques of ecological restoration?
Ecological restoration includes a wide diversity of methods including erosion control, reforestation, removal of non-native species and weeds, revegetation of disturbed areas, daylighting streams, the reintroduction of native species, habitat and range improvement for targeted species and establishing wildlife.

What are the four approaches to ecological restoration?
Four key approaches to ecological restoration are natural regeneration, active restoration, rehabilitation and reclamation. These approaches vary in their level of intervention and aim to restore degraded ecosystems to a more natural or functional state.
