Inauguration of Sela Tunnel in Arunachal: Bridging Gaps, Connecting Borders

PM Narendra Modi's visit to Arunachal Pradesh on March 9 marked a significant occasion as he inaugurated the strategically crucial Sela Tunnel. Alongside this monumental project, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for approximately 20 other development initiatives in the Northeast region, underscoring the Government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the far eastern corner of India.

The visit's centrepiece was the Sela Tunnel, an ambitious road tunnel constructed at an elevation of 3,000 metres in Arunachal Pradesh. It will provide year-round connectivity to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, making it the world's longest bi-lane tunnel at 12.04 km. This tunnel is a crucial development ensuring all-weather access to the challenging terrain of Tawang, near the Tibet border, and represents a noteworthy achievement in the region's infrastructure.

The Sela Tunnel will strengthen strategic capabilities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Its location near Sela Pass, a crucial point in the region, will play a pivotal role in facilitating troop deployment and the movement of machinery, bolstering India's military presence in the area.

Constructed by the Border Roads Organisation under Project Vartak, the tunnel project holds immense strategic importance in combating external threats. It will significantly reduce travel time and ensure all-weather access along the NH13 road to Tawang, a region known for its picturesque landscapes and cultural heritage.

As a key milestone in India's infrastructure development, the Sela Tunnel will enhance military capabilities and boost tourism in Tawang, offering visitors a smoother and more reliable travel experience. The tunnel's construction using the latest tunnelling methods will ensure uninterrupted travel, contributing to the growth of tourism in the region and positioning Tawang as a popular destination in the North East.

Engage with us in a conversation about the completion of the Sela Tunnel and its profound impact on the local community, tourism, and bolstering internal security.

What are the advantages of tunnel boring?
1. Less rock damage:- Tunnel Boring Machine causes less rock damage as compared to the other
drilling machines that decrease the overbreak value.
2. Fewer support requirements:- TBM does not need huge support to operate. It can operate on
minimal system requirements.

What are the design factors of tunnels?
The second factor to consider is the tunnel geometry and alignment, which include the tunnel diameter, length, depth, curvature, slope and cross-section shape. These parameters affect the choice of tunneling method in terms of the equipment size, capacity, flexibility and performance.

What are the three main types of tunnels?
There are three basic types of tunnel construction in common use:-
1. Cut-and-cover tunnel, constructed in a shallow trench and then covered over.
2. Bored tunnel, constructed in situ without removing the ground above.
3. Immersed tube tunnel, sunk into a body of water and laid on or buried just under its bed.

What are the basic of tunnel construction?
Now-a-days, engineers know that there are three basic steps to building a stable tunnel. The first step is excavation: engineers dig through the earth with a reliable tool or technique. The second step is support: engineers must support any unstable ground around them while they dig.

Do we need planning permission for a tunnel?
A normal greenhouse or garden polytunnel will not usually require planning permission. If our polytunnel is more than 3m high. If our tunnel is covering more than half of the area around our house.

Who builds tunnels?
Traylor Bros., Inc. is one of the most respected and sought-after tunneling firms in a very specialized industry. We are one of the few companies that possess the ability to complete the most technically demanding underground projects whether soft ground or hard rock.

How are tunnels designed?
The basic geometry of the tunnel is a continuous arch. Because tunnels must withstand tremendous pressure from all sides, the arch is an ideal shape. In the case of a tunnel, the arch simply goes all the way around. Tunnel engineers like bridge engineers, must be concerned with an area of physics known as statics.

What is the basic knowledge about tunnel?
There are three basic types of tunnel construction in common use. Cut-and-cover tunnels are constructed in a shallow trench and then covered over. Bored tunnels are constructed in situ, without removing the ground above. Finally, a tube can be sunk into a body of water, which is called an immersed tunnel.

How are tunnels stable?
Tunnel is a thin walled closed excavated cross section and according to peck's theory, tunnel get stability in a ground through deformation of its shape and/or support from surrounding ground makes it stable.
