Recently, Chief Minister Pema Khandu launched the Matsya e-Vaahini and e-Rickshaw Initiative to strengthen market access for fish farmers across Arunachal Pradesh. The initiative aims to support direct sales to consumers, reduce transportation challenges, improve price realization and help fish farmers increase their income.

It also promotes eco-friendly fish transportation while reducing dependence on middlemen. With better access to markets and improved transportation, the initiative can help fish farmers reach consumers more efficiently and create better opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

Join the Discussion on MyGov Arunachal Pradesh:

Can direct farmer-to-consumer sales help fish farmers receive better prices?

How can Matsya e-Vaahini and e-Rickshaws improve fish supply in remote areas?

What additional support is needed for fish farmers in areas such as cold storage, transportation, training and market access?

4. Wild Species Impact:- Farmed fish frequently escape into open waters, competing with native species for resources and spreading diseases to wild populations.
5. Feed Inefficiencies:- Many farmed fish (like salmon) are carnivores and consume more wild-caught fishmeal than they ultimately produce, placing additional pressure on global fisheries.

1. Water Pollution:- Uneaten food and fish waste accumulate in and around pens, releasing excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus that degrade water quality.
2. Disease and Parasites:- Crowded conditions cause chronic stress and make fish vulnerable to bacterial, viral and parasitic outbreaks such as sea lice.
3. Chemical and Antibiotic Use:- Farmers frequently rely on antibiotics and chemicals to control disease, which can lead to resistant pathogens and harm local marine ecosystems.

The following Benefits for Remote Fish Supply:-
1. Better Transportation:- Electric vehicles navigate narrow rural and hilly roads easily. They cut travel time to isolated villages.
2. Preserving Freshness:- Vehicles equipped with built-in ice boxes maintain a mini cold chain. This stops the fish from spoiling on long trips.
3. Direct Sales:- Farmers sell straight to buyers without using middlemen. This lowers final prices for people living far away and increases earnings for local producers.
