Arunachal Pradesh, the largest north-eastern state having total geographical area of 83, 743 sq. Km is endowed with vast natural resources mainly forest, minerals and hydro power potential. Arunachal Pradesh having advantages being the one of the global hotspot of biodiversity, harbouring immensely rich floral and faunal species amidst wide ranging agro-climatic conditions on one hand and the treasure of indigenous traditional knowledge base and skill of the ethnic people regarding utilization of the resources available around them on the other is uniquely placed for large scale application of science & technology. The resources are to be utilized on sustainable basis with science and technological applications for development without any degradation to the ecology and environment of the state. Thus, Science & Technology can play a vital role towards utilization and management of the vast natural resources and addressing the Location specific problems for all round development of the state.

In this direction, Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science & Technology (APSCS&T) was established in the year 1992 to cater to the need of Science & Technological requirements of the state and to advise government on policies and measures necessary to promote utilization of Science and Technology for achieving the socio-economic objectives of the state. Since 1995 onwards, APSCS&T have been playing catalytic role with the basic objectives for promoting application of science & technology for proper utilization of natural resources, mapping, documentation and development of Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS), replication of technologies and popularization and communication of science & technology etc. for development of human skill in rural areas and creating scientific awareness among the mass people of the state.

In the year 1996, State Remote Sensing Application Centre (SRSAC) was established under the aegis of APSCS&T as an apex body to utilize the advanced state-of- the art Remote Sensing and GIS technologies for inventory, mapping and monitoring of natural resources and planning for their sustainable development.

The S & T requirements of the state are met by the A. P. State Council for Science & Technology which is also the nodal agency for the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi in the State. The Council headed by the Director cum Member Secretary has been expediting its role towards achieving its objectives with the limited available technical manpower supported by the ministerial personnel.

Recent years have witnessed tremendous changes in the trend of development and economy in the state along with rest of the country. Science & Technology needs to play a crucial proactive role for the socio-economic upliftment of the state for which APSCS&T is initiating necessary strategy, mechanism to achieve its objectives and goals.
