Recently, Chief Minister Pema Khandu launched the Matsya e-Vaahini and e-Rickshaw Initiative to strengthen market access for fish farmers across Arunachal Pradesh. The initiative aims to support direct sales to consumers, reduce transportation challenges, improve price realization and help fish farmers increase their income.
It also promotes eco-friendly fish transportation while reducing dependence on middlemen. With better access to markets and improved transportation, the initiative can help fish farmers reach consumers more efficiently and create better opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

Can direct farmer-to-consumer sales help fish farmers receive better prices?
How can Matsya e-Vaahini and e-Rickshaws improve fish supply in remote areas?
What additional support is needed for fish farmers in areas such as cold storage, transportation, training and market access?

What are the negative environmental impacts of aquaculture?
Aquaculture causes negative environmental impacts primarily through nutrient pollution, habitat destruction, disease transfer to wild species and reliance on wild-caught fish feed.

3. Bycatch:- Unintentional netting kills millions of non-target animals annually including sharks, sea turtles, marine mammals and seabirds.
4. Ghost Fishing:- Lost, abandoned or discarded fishing gear continues to trap and kill marine life for years.
5. Pollution and Waste:- Fuel emissions from fishing vessels, fish-feed waste and chemical treatments from aquaculture pens pollute local water columns and seabeds.

Major Environmental Impacts:-
1. Overfishing:- Removing target fish faster than they can reproduce collapses populations and triggers trophic cascades that disrupt entire marine food webs.
2. Habitat Destruction:- Heavy gear like bottom trawls and dredging drag across the seafloor, crushing fragile coral reefs, seagrass beds and structural benthic habitats.

What are the negatives of fish farming?
Fish farming causes major environmental pollution, spreads diseases to wild populations and relies heavily on catching wild fish for feed.
